First we need a nice temporary display. This one was inexpensive and easy to
do. **NOTE** squish an indent into styrofoam so you know where your santa and snowman will stand! Next make a snowman from your favorite polyclay .. including a nice snowman vest. Instead of the traditional 3 snowball snowman ... I opted for a tear drop shape body and round head. I used tiny branches for his arms ... and sculpted a fimo nose and hat. |
1. Assemble your doll body with a pipecleaner armature. Be sure to bend
him in a crouched position. Check to make sure you have correct height
by holding to the floor between your fingers. Next assemble doll as desired
... I used fimo to build him a santa tummy and butt. This also made his
legs sturdy. 2. Paints - simply cut two rectangles out of red material. Measure from ground to just under his belly. You might want to make the rectangles more *V* shape to accomodate his big belly. Then simply turn under hem and one side edge to wrong side and glue. Next wrap around santa's legs/waist as shown and glue flat. Make to sure cut pants off BELOW his belly ... but cover his butt! He gets a belt so you won't see the raw edge. 3. Cut a small square from batiste, and glue as shown to right aboe his pants. Then fold up and glue to his tummy. Its hard to see on the photo ... but santa has an opened shirt/vest and his undergarments (long underwear) are showing. 4. Vest/shirt dikki ... cut a rectangle to size from belly to neck. Cut a tiny triangle out of bottom to make shirt look open. Turn under very bottom edges and glue to wrong side for finished hem. You can crease the rectangle down the middle and glue to resemble a buttoned shirt. Lastly take a small strip, folding edges into middle and glue this around neck (kinda like turtleneck). 5. Glue on his blue belt (under his stomach of course) and belt buckle and key chain. |
6. Take BARAT robe pattern ... shorten it slightly ... or simply cut a T shape
from your blue velveteen. An easy way to do this is simply lay doll down,
trace (with room of course) around arms and torso giving you correct sleeve
length and length of coat. Sew from hem to cuff as shown. Press open seams. Then take strip of snoman material and glue one edge to right side of blue coat and wrap around excess material to provide a facing for the underside of coat as shown. Glue in place. Now glue *faux fur* around entire coat hem and up the front and around neck. Slide coat on doll ... drape excess coat over butt to show off his vest. In fact you can position his hands to hold his coat away like he's thinking or puzzled. 7. Wigging .... take your hair (I used roving) and glue on one curled - wavy strand at a time until you get a wind blown effect (or whatever you desire). Same with beard. Thats it!
